Before the spotlight, there were shadows. Before the trophies, there were pioneers.

First Racers honors the forgotten Black jockeys whose courage, discipline, and brilliance helped shape the earliest legacy of the Kentucky Derby. Standing at the center, the rider stretches wide like a man carrying history on his back, flanked by powerful horses and surrounded by the faces of those who raced not only for victory, but for visibility.

The roses bloom like remembrance. The chains, the reins, the worn silks all speak to sacrifice and resilience. These were men who mastered speed while carrying the weight of a country still struggling to see their humanity.

Yet this work does not dwell in silence or sorrow. It rises in dignity. It reminds us that greatness often begins with those history tried to overlook.

To live with First Racers is to honor legacy, perseverance, and the undeniable truth that pioneers leave tracks the world can never fully erase.

About the Artist

Thomas begins the creation of his masterpieces with a blank black canvas, bringing instant depth and contrast to the art. Using white crayon or pencil, he sketches out what he sees in his mind's eye, what has been given to him in a dream or by the spirit of God. His inspirations come from all around him, from music and movement to life stories and current events. There is a magic behind the journey each piece takes from conception to completion, a journey that manifests itself at the final destination of the purchaser's wall. Layering elements of fabric, paper, and metal, Thomas infuses a variety of textures to match the intricate lines of his creations.
